All you need to know about Coventry’s Accession Proclamation reading tomorrow

Coventry Editorial 10th Sep, 2022   0

COVENTRY’S official reading of the Accession Proclamation will be held at 1pm tomorrow on the steps of the Council House.

It will be read by Coventry Lord Mayor Coun Kevin Maton with members of the public invited to attend.

The road outside the Council House will be closed to traffic so people can gather to watch and a live stream of the event will be available.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, the Proclamation formally announces the start of the reign of King Charles III.

It was first made at a meeting of the Privy Council today, followed by a reading at St James’ Palace and afterwards in London.

Local proclamations will be read tomorrow across the country.

The Union Flag outside the Council House was raised for the national proclamation but will be lowered again to half-mast after the Lord Mayor’s reading.

Lord Mayor, Coun Kevin Maton, said: “This is an historic event in our city and country, and we know many will want to attend as a mark of love and respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and support for her son and our new monarch, King Charles III.”

People can pay their tributes to the late Queen Elizabeth II by laying flowers at the altar end of the Cathedral Ruins.

Books of Condolence are available at the Council House and Cathedral, and a virtual book, which has had nearly 200 contributions so far, is available on the Coventry City Council website.
