Alzheimer's Society launches campaign to fight against dementia

A CAMPAIGN calling on people to unite in the fight against dementia has been launched by Alzheimer’s Society.

People across the region are being asked to set aside their differences to combat dementia, which is set to become the 21st century’s biggest killer.

Someone develops dementia every three minutes, and currently there’s no cure.

However, in an attempt to fight off the disease, Alzheimer’s Society has launched a campaign which aims to change the landscape of dementia forever by reaching every person affected by the condition to offer help and support.

A television advert, directed by Oscar and BAFTA-nominated Daniel Barber, has been created to help spread awareness about the charity’s ambitions.

It is hoped the advert will help combat divisions in society – such as age and gender identity – to bring everyone together to help find a cure.

Tony Refson, services manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Warwickshire said: “We’re determined to bring everyone’s attention to the massive injustice faced by people with dementia and their carers.

“Alzheimer’s Society hears day in, day out about people with dementia and their carers struggling.

“There are an estimated 7,800 people living with dementia in Warwickshire.

“We urgently need people in Warwickshire to unite with us to improve care, offer help and understanding to those affected and find a cure.

“Together, we can bring about change.”

The campaign is being supported by ex-Wales international footballer Robbie Savage, who lost his dad Colin to younger onset dementia.

He said: “People think dementia is an old person’s condition but it isn’t.

“My dad was struck down in his prime. Dementia can affect anyone anywhere.

“In the end he couldn’t speak, swallow or recognise me at all.

“To see him like that was devastating for the whole family. That’s why it’s so important for me to get involved with this campaign.”
