Amazon Coventry workers take further strike action

Coventry Editorial 17th Apr, 2023   0

THE GMB union claims over 600 Coventry Amazon workers have now joined ‘a historic campaign’ after they took three more days of industrial action this week.

The Coventry workers walked out yesterday and will remain on strike until the end of tomorrow (April 18).

They will also strike for three more days from April 21.

This latest round of industrial action will bring the total number of strike days at the site to 14.

The union claims the ongoing dispute with the retail giant is over an offer of less than 50p made to workers, who are campaigning for £15 an hour.

Fresh strike ballots are taking place for union staff at Amazon’s fulfilment centres in Mansfield, Coalville, Kegworth, Rugeley and Rugby.

Amanda Gearing, GMB Senior Organiser, said:”More are joining the union every day, Amazon said it would never happen, and that only a tiny number would join industrial action over their pay rise of pennies.

“Morale on the picket line is sky high and these workers aren’t giving up until they get the pay justice they deserve.”

An Amazon spokesperson said the firm regularly reviews its pay to ensure it offers competitive wages.

“We recently announced another increase for our UK teams.

“Over the past seven months, our minimum pay has risen by 10 per cent and by more than 37 per cent since 2018.

“We also work hard to provide great benefits, a positive work environment and excellent career opportunities.”

The spokesperson added the minimum starting pay for Amazon employees will be between £11 and £12 per hour, depending on the location.

The current national living wage in the UK is £10.42 per hour, while the real living wage outside London is £10.90 an hour.
