POLICE have released ‘crystal clear’ footage of a pair of purse dippers stealing an elderly woman’s purse in a Coventry supermarket.
In the CCTV images, a woman is seen to distract a lone elderly female shopper while her accomplice checks her shopping trolley and swiftly dips his hand into her personal trolley bag and takes her purse.
The pair then team up in another aisle where the man transfers the purse to the woman’s shopping basket, where she neatly covers it with a bag of potatoes.
The duo are then seen to leave the store separately.
The theft happened around 11.30am on Wednesday, May 27 in Aldi on Roseberry Avenue, Bell Green.
Inspector Gez Amadeo, from Coventry Police, said: “The purse contained the woman’s pension and bank cards, which were used for purchases before being cancelled.
“The ruse is an all too common one and can be devastating for the victim.
“The CCTV footage in this case is excellent quality and I am confident that someone will recognise the pair so that we can bring them to justice.”
Police have also issued a reminder to shoppers not to leave bags in trolleys unattended, even for a moment, and ensure they are closed with purses and valuables kept completely out of sight.
Anyone who recognises the man and woman should call Coventry Investigation Team on 101 or provide information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
