Appeal to find Coventrians involved in creating 'ahead of it's time' tapestry from 1960's

Coventry Editorial 17th May, 2023   0

AN APPEAL has been launched to find those involved in creating a tapestry in Coventry which dates back to the early 1960s.

Children from St John’s School made the piece more than 60 years ago, led by Mrs Edith Creswell.

The tapestry is billed as being ‘ahead of its time’, depicting images from different cultures, folk tales, myths and legends which were also seen in the 2023 coronation when the nation came together.

Mandy Mills from Mrs T Wool Shop in Allesley Park, where the tapestry hangs now, wants to hear from anyone who remembers being part of creating the masterpiece, not thinking at the time they were actually creating history.

Anyone who remembers Mrs Cresswell, the English, religious knowledge and arts teacher, who also taught pottery, is urged to get in touch.

Mandy is hoping to compile memories of Mrs Cresswell and an exhibition of pieces of pottery or embroidery made by people inspired by her lessons.

Contact Mandy at Mrs T Wool Shop at 59 Winsford Avenue, Allesley Park, or call her on 02476 715712 and help keep this element of Coventry history alive.
