Artists sought for Coventry City of Culture's #HumansOfCov campaign

Coventry Editorial 11th Jan, 2019   0

THE team that will deliver UK City of Culture in Coventry has launched a search for artists to respond to its #HumansOfCov campaign.

The Coventry City of Culture Trust launched #HumansOfCov in December to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by taking Robert Montgomery’s 14ft Peace Poem to communities across the city.

Coventry City of Culture Trust is now calling on poets, writers, storytellers and spoken word artists who live within a CV postcode to come forward and be part of a project that responds to each of the 30 articles in the Declaration.

The trust is commissioning 30 short written or verbal pieces that respond to #HumansOfCov that are no more than ten lines.

The call-out will close at midday on February 8, 2019, and the final commission will need to be delivered by April 30, 2019.

Chenine Bhathena, creative director of the Coventry City of Culture Trust, said: “We had a fantastic response to the launch of #HumansOfCov, this is the start of our conversation about human rights and what they mean in a modern and diverse city in the 21st Century.

“We want to highlight and celebrate the everyday heroes of Cov during this campaign and shine a light on the grassroots activism that the city has been renowned for during its history.

“This call-out is a chance for Coventry-based artists to come forward and to be part of this project right from its inception. We really want to encourage work from all of our communities to truly reflect Coventry’s incredible diversity.”

Artists who want to apply should send their idea into the City of Culture team and say which of the Human Rights will inspire their work and how they intend to submit the work.

Examples of submitted work could be written submissions on paper, video recordings of performed work, audio clips or photos of painted work.

Examples of previous work should also be provided in the application.

For each artist commissioned, there will be a £500 fee paid. For more information on how to apply, go to https://coventry2021.co.uk/jobs/
