AS THE YEAR as the UK City of Culture nears, artists are being urged to submit ideas to brighten up the Coventry Railway Station

The existing Grade II listed station building will be improved as part of the Coventry Station Masterplan works.

The current work ongoing at the station will see the creation of a second footbridge, a second station entrance building, a 633 space multi-storey car park and improved accessibility.

In partnership with Avanti West Coast, Coventry City Council is inviting artists, designers and creators to submit their ideas for four briefs:

* Multi-functional seating and micro park installation

* Refurbishment of the ‘Welcome to Coventry’ sign on Platform 4

* Vinyl treatment for the station windows

* A mural for the car park façade next to Platform 1

Coun Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs and Regeneration, said: “The first and last hour of a visit to any city are the most important in terms of visitor impression so we want to make sure our station makes a good first impression.

“The station is the fastest growing outside London and although the original building is listed we can work within that to make some small but important improvements.

“We have one of the best located stations in the UK, and with a new car park and second entrance we will soon have a station we can all be proud of too.”

Coun David Welsh, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities said, “This a great opportunity for local artists to get involved in their own city’s transformation. Art can play a really important part in the cultural and economic success of towns and cities.”

“This is a great opportunity for local artists to be involved with helping shape the city, not just for our time as UK City of Culture but by creating a lasting legacy to be enjoyed by local people too. I’d urge our very talented local artists to get involved.”

The deadline for expression of interests is Friday, November 20.

Artists wanting to add their details to the artist database, should visit www.coventry.gov.uk/artistdatabase or for more information on the briefs contact [email protected]
