Bedworth bakery burglar jailed

A BEDWORTH bakery burglar who claimed he had found the three chocolate brownies he had in his pocket when arrested on the floor has been jailed for 36 weeks.

At 11.47pm on November 16, Adam Bennett was seen on CCTV entering a bakery on All Saints Square in Bedworth through the front door, which was locked.

Police were called by shop security staff after the intruder alarm had been triggered, with officers later finding the glass had been smashed.

Bennett, who matched the description of the man caught on CCTV, was arrested around the corner on Mill Street shortly after with three sealed chocolate brownies in his pocket.

The 45-year-old would later claim he had found the brownies on the floor, and that someone had swapped their coat and bag with him before his arrest.

Two days later, at 3:26am, Bedworth town centre CCTV operators informed police a supermarket delivery van parked on Mill Street had been broken into through the passenger side window.

The camera captured a man smashing the window before entering the van and taking an item from the back.

Attending officers found Bennett, who matched the description from the CCTV, outside of the supermarket.

During his police interview, Bennett lost his temper and demanded to be put in jail.

On Monday (November 20), Bennett, of Adelaide Court, Bedworth, was sentenced at Coventry Magistrates Court for charges of burglary, theft from a vehicle, criminal damage, and two counts of interference with a motor vehicle.

He has also been ordered to pay compensation of £154.

PC Wheldon said: “Bennett has been a persistent nuisance to businesses around Bedworth town centre.

“Many, including us, will be satisfied with this robust sentencing as a proper response to Bennett’s behaviour, and we hope that Bennett himself hears the message too.

“We are hoping that after 36 weeks in prison, Adam will take the opportunity to seek help, correct his behaviour, and take proper responsibility for his actions in future.”
