Brexit Party triumphs in Coventry with European election success

THE BREXIT Party and the Liberal Democrats were the big winners in the European elections both nationally and regionally.

Nationally Nigel Farage’s newly formed Brexit Party won 29 seats, followed by the Liberal Democrats with 16, Labour with ten, The Green Party with seven, Conservatives with four, the SNP with three and Plaid Cymru with one.

The Conservatives and Labour suffered a Brexit backlash.

In Coventry, the Brexit Party won the most votes with 21,260 with Labour following closely behind on 16,990.




The Liberal Democrats earned 10,082 votes, but fell short of emulating the party’s second placed finish nationally.

The Green Party got 7,820, trumping the Conservative Party who only gained 5,083, reflecting its poor performance nationally.


UKIP earned only 3,269 votes with only Change UK polling worse after gaining 2,017 votes.

Coventry was part of the West Midlands Region, which elected seven MEPs.

Turnout in Coventry was 30.68 per cent.

Those elected in the West Midlands were Rupert Lowe, Martin Daubney, Andrew Keer (Brexit Party), RogerBennion (Liberal Democrats) Neena Gill (Labour Party), Eleanor Chowns (Green Party), Anthea McIntyre (Conservative).

Results in the rest of the West Midlands were:

* Rugby borough – The Brexit Party 10,987, Liberal Democrats 6,255, Conservative 3,330, Green Party 3,140, Labour 2,937,

UK Independence Party 1,224, Change UK 1,075. Turnout – 48.72 per cent.

* Stratford district – The Brexit Party 14,723, Liberal Democrats 11,329, Conservative 5,761, Green Party 5,169, Change UK 1,824, Labour 1,628, UK Independence Party 1,133. Turnout – 42.49 per cent.

* Warwick district – Liberal Democrats 13,233, The Brexit Party 11,207, Green Party 8,289, Conservative 4,406, Labour 4,231

Change UK 1,929, UK Independence Party 1,535. Turnout – 42.04 per cent.

Votes polled across the West Midlands – The Brexit Party 507,152, Liberal Democrats, 219,982, Labour Party 228,298, Green Party 143,520, Conservative 135,279, UK Independence Party 66,934, Change UK 45,673. Turnout – 33.1 per cent
