MARKING the British Council’s 90th anniversary, Christie’s post war and contemporary art day and online sale will feature works to support British Council fundraising efforts.

The sale will take place tomorrow (October 10).

Since 1938 the council has collected art works and has nearly 9,000 artworks by over 1,500 artists.

The collection is set to move to Coventry as part of a new culture gateway centre which will also house the Arts Council Collection, Culture Coventry Trust and Coventry University.

This will secure the future of the British Council Collection and establish it as a leading educational and exhibition resource for international talent.

Artworks include: Tracey Emin’s ‘I Think I Love You’ white neon sign, Ian Davenport’s ‘Pull’, Julian Opie’s ‘Sungsic’ and Anthony Gormley’s ‘Clearing 85’.

Andrew McGlynn, development director at the British Council said: “We are thrilled that in our 90th anniversary year these iconic artists, who have each made a significant contribution to our work in arts and culture, have so generously supported our future ambitions.

“Their support will help fund our ambitious plans for the British Council Collection as it moves to a new home in Coventry.”
