A burglar who targeted the homes of young Chinese women to break into at night to sexually abuse them and steal will spend at least ten years behind bars.
A judge imposed an extended prison sentence on Roy Daley.
As we previously reported, he had travelled on his Honda scooter from his home in Birmingham to Coventry to raid houses where he had identified his victims as living.
And one of his victims described how he had tied her to her bed and sexually assaulted her before making off with money and a bank card which he then used.
Despite overwhelming evidence, Daley denied two charges of trespass with intent to commit sexual offences, one of assault by penetration, three of burglary, as well as theft and assault.
After a jury at Warwick Crown Court took less than half an hour to find him guilty of all eight charges, his case was adjourned for an assessment of the danger he poses.
At Wolverhampton Crown Court, where he is now sitting, Judge Barry Berlin imposed an extended sentence after concluding that Daley (49) of Bordesley Green, Bordesley Green, Birmingham, does pose a danger to women.
Daley was jailed for 15 years, of which he will have to serve at least ten years before the Parole Board can even consider freeing him on licence – and he may have to serve the whole term, after which he will remain on licence for an additional five years.
During the trial, prosecutor John Farmer said: “He was targeting young Chinese females living on their own.
“In a sinister development, after breaking in he carried out a sexual assault on one of them – and intended to do so on another, who screamed, and he pushed her onto the bed and fled.”
His first victim, a 20-year-old Chinese woman, told the jury she was woken by her door opening, and saw a man wearing a head torch and thick leather gloves.
“I had nothing on, just pants. He pulled them off. He pressed me down and tied my hands together, probably using my bath towel. He put my scarf over my face and then he put my pillow over my face.”
He then took £20 in cash and, ignoring a Chinese bank card, took her British one and made her write down the pin number.
He then tied her up and sexually assaulted her.
Daley rode off on his scooter to Earlsdon post office, where a CCTV camera captured him. He used the stolen bank card to withdraw £400, said Mr Farmer.
Six days later Daley targeted a 22-year-old Chinese student, getting into her room in a Coventry flat at 6.30 in the morning, and she also woke to see him in the doorway with a torch.
As he came in she screamed loudly for her flatmates, and he pushed her down on the bed with his hand over her mouth, but then fled without following up his attack.
By the time of his next visit to Coventry at the end of January, the police were looking out for the stocky black attacker with a black Honda PCX 125cc scooter.
He was arrested in a car park after running off and being ‘red-spotted’ with a Taser.
He had a bag with a screwdriver and other items including binoculars, which Mr Farmer suggested he had used to pick out his victims, while on him he had some Chinese money.
Daley, who was bizarrely wearing four pairs of trousers and four tops and coats,
The jury were not told, on his phone was a recording, apparently made during another burglary, zooming in on the genital area of a young Chinese woman asleep on a bed in just pants and a crop-top.
Daley did not give evidence, but had told the police he had travelled from Birmingham to go to a Caribbean night club, and knew nothing about the burglary that night and had never seen the key before.
