Call for Coventry volunteers to keep food reaching those in need during coronavirus pandemic

Coventry Editorial 20th Mar, 2020   0

COVENTRY Foodbank has called for volunteers to keep emergency food parcels reaching those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Delivery drivers and warehouse packers are particularly required.

Hugh McNeill, director of the foodbank, said: “We are actively looking for volunteers, as a lot of our staff were over 70 and had to step out for now.

“One of the issues we are facing is that demand has increased a lot, so if people can continue to donate at supermarkets – if there is any long-life milk, tinned tomatoes, tinned meat and veg, squash or tea and coffee, please continue to drop it in the foodbank points.

“We are switching to prepacking food so we are in need of volunteers in our warehouse at Binley. Our operating hours are 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday, though we are set to extend to Saturdays soon.

“I also ask anyone who is setting up a community support group due to coronavirus to consider getting in touch with us to we can co-ordinate contingency across the city.”

Interested volunteers can contact the food bank ot 02476 993770.

Elsewhere, the Real Junk Food Project Coventry put out a call for restaurants, pubs and schools set to close due to the pandemic, to message them via Facebook, as it continues providing hot meals to those who need them.
