Cash for city cycle route

A PROPOSED new cycle route connecting Coventry city centre with Binley Business Park has received £5 million funding.

The Binley Road scheme will include segregation from traffic and enable sustainable access from Coventry University through to the busy business park.

Funding has been allocated by West Midlands Combined Authority towards implementation. This is the first phase of a longer route from Coventry city centre to University Hospital.

Works to develop the proposals are part of a move to encourage more people to use sustainable methods of transport across the West Midlands to improve air quality and health.

Coun Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: “We want to encourage people out of their cars and the best way to do this is to ensure we have safe and accessible routes to use.

“This funding is going to make a massive difference in helping us ensure we can offer this, and get more people on their bikes in Coventry for work, study and leisure.

“It will also make it easier for people to cycle to Binley Business Park, helping to reduce traffic congestion at peak times around this busy employment site.”

The plans for the route will be developed during 2020, including a public consultation to help with the design process.
