A Coventry Cathedral choral scholar has reached the semi-final stage of the BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2020 competition.
Sebastian Carrington, has reached the semi-final stage of the BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2020 competition which is run jointly by BBC Songs of Praise and BBC Radio 2.
The competition will see five boys and five girls choristers from across the country compete for the much coveted title. The semi-finals and final are expected to be filmed in early Autumn. Two semi-finals will be broadcast on television in late November and the final three girls and three boys will go through to a final that will be broadcast on BBC 1 and Radio 2 in December.
One winner will be awarded the title ‘BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2020’ and will receive a trophy as well as performing on Songs of Praise and taking part in radio recordings. There may also be opportunities for the winner’s choir or music group to be broadcast on BBC Radio and a chance to experience a recording session with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sebastian began formal singing lessons aged seven years old and quickly progressed through the ABRSM singing grades, until finally passing grade 8 with distinction. He became the youngest person to take an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music diploma exam at the age of eleven years old, which he passed with a Distinction.
After singing as a chorister at Coventry Cathedral for many years, Sebastian is now a counter-tenor with the Choral Scholars and Clerks. He also sings in the Senior Choir and a Vocal Ensemble at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
