COVENTRY CATHEDRAL has responded to the announcement that they are to receive an £870,000 government grant to help fund repairs to the Chapel of Unity.
The £870,000 sum, from the national First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund, is the largest government grant in the UK for repairs.
The money will be used to remount slates at the cathedral’s Chapel of Unity – work is expected to take two years.
A statement released on Friday (July 29) read: “Coventry Cathedral is delighted we are able to complete a full and lasting repair of the Chapel of Unity.
“This project has been beyond our means and we could not have even completed the initial trial work without this generous funding.
“Following the destruction of the old cathedral in 1940, a new ground-breaking Chapel of Unity for all Christian denominations was established in the crypts. “These spaces have been made watertight as a result of another generous grant.
“It seems fitting now to move to the repair of the newer equivalent as the next major project.
“The Chapel of Unity was designed as a meeting place for all denominations and has been consistently used for more than fifty years.”
The statement continues and touches on how the failure to fix the slate cladding has been a problem since 1962 and the new work carried out will ensure the fabric is secured for the next 100 years.
It adds: “It’s essential we don’t have to revisit this part of the building in the next 100 years as there is much more work to be done.
“Following on from this significant project, we are keen to implement our emerging development plan which encapsulates our vision for reinvigorating all of the Cathedral area and all we do here.
“The funding for the essential backlog conservation and repair project is invaluable and we are very grateful to the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund for their generous award.”
The Cathedral still needs funds to maintain the two cathedrals and is urging Coventry residents to come forward and support the work they do.
