Celebration time as Sky Blues book play-off semi-final place

Coventry Editorial 8th May, 2023   0

COVENTRY City have confirmed their play-off semi-final place with a 1-1 draw away to Middlesbrough this afternoon.

The Sky Blues started the day knowing their destiny was in their hands and a point would cement their place.

The opening goal from Hamer, set up by Godden, after 22 minutes calmed the nerves but Boro equalised in injury time at the end of the first half through Archer.

In the places below Coventry, the order was changing as Milwall and Sunderland held their own tug-o-war over the final play-off place.

Milwall looked good for it after going 3-1 up against fellow contenders Blackburn, which did put Coventry into sixth for a time. But when Blackburn got back level and then took a 3-4 lead, and with Sunderland winning 3-0 away to Preston, there was only going to be one team getting the final place.

It will be a case of ‘We’ll meet again’ between today’s two sides as the Sky Blues will play Middlesbrough in the semi-final.

The first match will be at the CBS Arena at 12pm on Sunday with the return leg at 8pm on May 17 at the Riverside.

The winners will meet either Luton or Sunderland in a showpiece Wembley Stadium final in a match billed ‘the most lucrative in football’.
