CHARTERHOUSE, one of Coventry’s finest medieval buildings, will be holding a series of events to celebrate its reopening following an £8million restoration.

‘Charterhouse Reveals’ has been planned by Historic Coventry Trust to attract all members of the community ahead of the launch of the Grade I listed building.

The project has also been funded by Coventry City of Culture Trust, National Heritage Lottery Fund, and National Trust.

The building will act as a focal point in the new Charterhouse Heritage Park, which covers 70 acres along the banks of the River Sherbourne.

The site was founded by King Richard II in 1385 and is one of Coventry’s oldest structures.

New interactive displays revealing Charterhouse’s long history have been added and major work has been done to restore the wall paintings and walled garden.

Charterhouse Reveals includes the Kitchen Garden Project, which will feature between 10am and 1pm every Friday from now until October.

The project, in partnership with Food Union, sees six volunteers planning, planting in and nurturing Charterhouse’s many kitchen garden spaces, learning to grow fruit, vegetables and heritage seeds.

Between 10am and 4pm on Sunday, April 24, there will be a guided tour of the fully restored crucifixion wall painting at Charterhouse, led by heritage specialist Perry Lithgow.

Saskia Huning will also be hosting a heritage craft presentation and recreation demonstration as part of that event.

There will be an education showcase from 4pm on May 5 where school teachers from across Coventry have been invited to view the Anglican Chapel and its potential as a new learning space for the city.

An event from the Coventry City of Culture Trust and Cultural Educational Partnership will give people the chance to tour Charterhouse to see how it could be used for future school visits.

The Shape of Sound at the Anglican Chapel between May 7 and 8 will examine how the inside of the ear works, as well as how sounds are affected by movement.

Historic Coventry Trust’s education and engagement manager Sarah Allen said: “The programme has been designed to showcase every aspect of Charterhouse and we hope members of the local community will come along.

“We want everyone to enjoy Coventry’s heritage and we hope this initial programme of events will be a great way for visitors to find out more about Charterhouse’s rich history and connect with nature.”
