Childrens Games opening ceremony and venue revealed

COVENTRY’S Assembly Festival Gardens has been confirmed as the venue for the International Children’s Games (ICG) opening ceremony.

The ceremony will get things under way on Friday, August 12, from 7pm and will feature performances from groups and organisations.

All 73 global cities will be able to enjoy the show, which is sponsored by Heart of England Community Foundation and Wesleyan Foundation.

Freeman Dance School, Ascension Dance and Off Balance Dance will all be performing and several special guests will be making an appearance.




The ICG will be take place from August 11 to August 16 and will see 1,500 youngsters aged between 12 and 15 from across the world compete in seven sports.

The athletes will head to the Cathedral Ruins before the ceremony starts, where they will parade around the city centre and make their way to the Festival Gardens.


Coventry City Council’s deputy leader and ICG stakeholder board chair, Coun Abdul Salam Khan, said: “What a great venue this will be for our Opening Ceremony.

“It will be the perfect setting for our athletes in the heart of the city and a venue that already holds so much legacy for Coventry.

“I’m also really pleased to announce the sponsorship from Heart of England Community Foundation and the Wesleyan Foundation for the ceremony.

“A huge thank you to both organisations.

“I very much look forward to watching it and being emerged in the whole International Children’s Games experience.”
