Child's play for veterinary physiotherapy students during lockdown

VETERINARY physiotherapy students have been demonstrating their skills on toy animals and pets at home as they are assessed at Moreton Morrell College during lockdown.

Tutors at the college have been encouraging degree-level students to use their pets to provide evidence of skills they have developed on their course.

Dogs and horses that students have at home have been utilised as assessment tools, with students video calling tutors, providing an alternative to regular practical skills tests which have been impossible due to Covid-19.

Students without animals at home have been using toy animals in practical sessions too to display techniques such as massage.

The students are studying on the BSc (Hons) Veterinary Physiotherapy course based at Moreton Morrell College, which has continued to provide access to learning, academic and pastoral support.

Tutors are already preparing for next year’s course by looking into how they can further utilise digital tools to ensure smooth running of the course as the country recovers from the impact of Covid-19.

Rhiannon Collett, course subject leader, said: “We’ve been working closely with our students to ensure they have had all the support necessary during these difficult times.

“A big part of their assessment is having a practical skills log, so it has been great to see innovative approaches from different students on how to provide evidence of these skills.

“All staff and students have been really adaptable and it’s clear we can do more bespoke online one-to-one learning in future, even after the world returns to normal.”
