Closing Coventry research group gifts cash from book sales to charity

A GROUP set up to promote women’s history in Coventry through its books has donated all its remaining cash to good causes after disbanding after 25 years.

The women’s research group was set up in 1998 as founding members felt women’s history had been neglected over the years.

The group, initially connected to Coventry University, aimed to produce a book showcasing women who had contributed to the city’s history in the 20th Century.

They went on to write several more, with the last one being 2016’s ‘Sent to Coventry’.

The group’s many works have included books which covered the war, places of interest in Coventry, shops and factories that no longer exist and events in the city.

Last week, the members held a final celebration morning at the city centre library, during which they donated £2,000 each to the Myton Hospices and Parkinson’s UK’s Warwickshire branch.

The group’s final £1,000 was donated to Fagin’s Waifs and Strays, a Coventry cat charity run by Pat Whitehouse which rescues cats and ensures they get any treatment needed before finding them a new home.

And the group has donated some of their old books to people in the hope they will be sold to raise cash for Bell and Partners vets, which assists Pat in her work with Fagin’s Waifs and Strays.

Women’s research group chair Christine Marsh said: “We had a lovely celebration morning at the library, we had food and reminisced about the group’s achievements.

“I’m so pleased the group’s legacy can continue through the donations, the charities were so grateful for the support we gave them.

“The research group has had some wonderful members and we’re going to continue to meet as friends, have coffee and read, research and write together without the hassle and hard work of doing a book.”
