Community veterans ask for public support to help win vital grant

VETERANS from a Coventry and Warwickshire community project are calling for the support of the local community to help win a vital grant.

Funded by University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire Charity, the ‘Giving Back Project’ aims to help veterans address difficulties with mental health such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

The project could receive a £25,000 of funding as part of the Aviva Community Fund 2016 – which sees members of the public vote a particular project, the project receiving the most support earns the grant.

Therefore the group is relying on votes to increase its chances of winning funding of up to £25,000 for the unique project, making additional community support even more vital.

If successful, the ‘Giving Back Project’ will support a group of eight veterans who will work in partnership with an award winning Outward Bound Centre to design a week long course for 12 disadvantaged young people and children.

By ‘Giving Back’ again to the community they live in, veterans will regain the sense of teamwork so crucial to them – while benefiting from helping others in need to learn some of their skills set.

Dan Barnard, head of adult psychological services, said: “It will cost £10,000 for eight veterans to be trained and deliver a course.

“The first could be funded by a grant from the Aviva Community Fund if we receive enough votes.

“The fact these veterans are not looking for a hand out and would rather offer others who are disadvantaged in some way says it all.”

The programme will assist veterans in their rehabilitation back into civilian life by addressing any feelings of isolation, allowing the opportunity to give something back and gain qualifications.
