CONSTRUCTION is set to start on Coventry College’s new electric vehicle and retrofit centre, with commercial fit-out specialists Inside Limited leading the project.

The new centre, the first of its kind in Coventry and Warwickshire, will cost £1million and be paid for through the government’s strategic development fund, providing specialist training to students and the wider workforce.

It will include an electric vehicle and battery training area and a new retrofit space featuring high-tech classrooms.

The new centre is part of the college’s Charge Up Your Future scheme, which intends to support a push towards a zero-carbon future.

Charge Up Your Future is part of the government’s Skills Accelerator programme, with £5million awarded to the region’s colleges to ensure education meets skills demand and capitalises on retrofitting and sustainable construction opportunities.

Rob Moore, Coventry College’s chief finance and operating officer, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Inside Limited to deliver this exciting and important facility for the region, which will help to prepare learners for vital work in the sustainability sector and upskill the current workforce to help achieve net-zero targets.”

Craig Frame, chief executive of the Milton Keynes-based Inside Limited, said: “Coventry has been home to world-class automotive manufacturing for the last 125 years and with technologies driving change, the EV training centre will be a huge hit.

“The new extended construction facility will enhance the learning experience by providing more covered external space as well as a brand-new internal classroom.”
