Coronavirus concerns about patient led to closure of Coventry GPs' evening surgery 'as precaution only'

Coventry Editorial 28th Feb, 2020 Updated: 28th Feb, 2020   0

CORONAVIRUS concerns about a patient led to the closure of a Coventry GPs’ surgery yesterday evening, the Observer can confirm.

But, in response to our questions. city health chiefs moved to dispel internet claims by patients that the case at Cheylesmore Surgery, Quinton Park, Cheylesmore, Coventry, was of ‘suspected coronavirus’, also known as Covid-19.

A spokesperson for Coventry and Rugby Clinical Commissioning Group told us: “A patient did present who had been to one of the specified countries but did not appear to have coronavirus symptoms and the practice took the precautionary measure to go through the nationally mandated procedure for management of a suspected case of covid-19.

“There are no confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus in the Coventry area at this time.”

They also told us: “To be clear on the situation: Cheylesmore Surgery closed yesterday evening at the normal time (6pm) and, in line with national guidance from the Department of Health and Social Care, conducted a clean of the surgery as a routine precautionary measure.

“Unfortunately this meant the evening extended access surgery, which is operated by the Coventry and Rugby GP Alliance and due to open at 6.30pm, was unable to go ahead.

“Patients booked into evening appointments were alerted to the change and given details of alternatives.

“Safety is of course our priority and the practice has been working with the public health teams to make sure there continues to be no risk to staff and patients. The surgery is open as usual today.”

There have so far been only 19 confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK, all involving infection abroad.
