A CITY councillor who was filmed hugging friends and shaking hands at a sports tournament in Coventry has resigned his cabinet position.

Coun Tariq Khan has stepped down as cabinet member for communities and housing.

A video which surfaced following a volleyball game at Edgewick Park in Foleshill on August 23 showed Coun Khan was not adhering to government coronavirus prevention rules.

It is reported that police were called to break up the large gathering.

Coventry City Council said Coun Khan will remain a ward councillor for Foleshill.

Councillor George Duggins, Leader of Coventry City Council, said: “I would like to place on record the tremendous work Tariq has achieved over the last 18 months as Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing.

“He has worked hard and with officers has made some significant progress especially in the work around housing and homelessness during that time.

“I will be announcing a replacement in the near future.”
