Country hotel helps the homeless

COOMBE ABBEY Country Hotel is spreading some seasonal warmth by lending a helping hand to homeless people this Christmas.

The management at the hotel has donated the old linen blankets to the Helping Hands Community Charity, which operates across Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth.

Helping Hands, set-up in 2012, distributes household goods, toys and clothes to the victims of domestic violence, homelessness and low income families across the area and runs a mobile soup kitchen.

The charity receives referrals from statutory organisations in the community, as well as by word of mouth.

Lisa Fell, Coombe Abbey Hotel marketing manager, said: “When we decided to change all of our bed linen, we knew that we wanted to give it all away to a good cause and this is when we teamed up with Helping Hands.

“We already knew about all the good work Helping Hands had done before – we thought it would be perfect to contact the charity and bring some Christmas spirit into the community.

“The winter months can be very hard for homeless and vulnerable people so little acts like this really can make a difference.

“We spoke to Helping Hands about the blanket giveaway idea and they loved it.

“We feel that it’s important to give something back to the community and it is great to see the bedding being put to such a good use.”

The blankets will also be donated to good causes in Coventry.

Lianne Kirkman, project co-ordinator for Helping Hands Community Charity, said: “This is a really kind gesture of Coombe Abbey Hotel and the blankets will be put to very good use.

“We estimate there are around 25-30 people living rough in Leamington and the surrounding area – we help in a number of ways including our mobile soup kitchen, sleeping bags and blankets.

“We are totally dependent on people’s generosity and we are really grateful for all the help we receive.

“The fact that Lisa and her team had heard of Helping Hands is fantastic and we are very grateful.”
