Coventrians can now apply to be the city's next poet laureate

Coventry Editorial 14th Jun, 2023   0

COVENTRIANS with a passion for poetry can now apply to become the city’s next poet laureate and young poet laureate.

The roles are honourary positions, with duties for those successful including writing poems to mark significant moments, performing their work and encouraging an interest in poetry across Coventry.

The two lucky poets will be appointed for a two-year stint in the roles in October.

Both the poet laureate and young poet laureate will be offered places on writing programmes.

Those applying are asked to submit two short poems, one of which should reference the theme of Refuge.

They are also asked to write a maximum of 300 words on their interest in becoming a poet laureate and what they feel they can bring to the role.

The poet laureate will need to be at least 18 years old on August 31 in order to apply.

Those aged between 13 and 17 years old on the same date will be able to apply for the young poet laureate role.

The closing date for applications is midday on Friday, August 18, after which those shortlisted will be invited to meet the selection panel.

Successful candidates will be announced in late September.
