Coventry all set for Godiva Festival 2014

Coventry Editorial 3rd Jul, 2014 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

A TICKET to the Glastonbury Festival would have set any festival-goer back more than £200 this year.

And while anyone lucky enough to watch the likes of Kasabian, Arcade Fire and Metallica might claim that to be good value for money, there’s arguably a better deal to be had this weekend.

That’s because the Godiva Festival is all set and ready to get underway tomorrow (Friday) – and it’s completely free.

This year’s line-up could prove to be one of the best in recent memory with Buzzcocks, Happy Mondays and The Lightning Seeds the headline acts across three days of music, comedy and fun.

Other top performers set to grace the War Memorial Park stage include We Are Scientists, The Selecter, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip and Funeral For A Friend.

And the Rhythm Tent is also set to be packed out for another year with Fuse ODG headlining on Saturday night.

Local favourites Neville Staple and Roddy Radiation are also booked on that stage for Saturday afternoon while Horace Panter’s Uptown Ska Collective will play on the main stage on Sunday.

Last year more than 125,000 people attended the festival – a record number in its 16-year history – after a washout cancelled the 2012 event.

Coun Abdul Khan, cabinet member for events, said similar numbers were expected this year.

“For the 2014 event we’ve actively looked at promoting the event across the wider region and, where possible, nationally as we’re very keen to attract visitors to the city and encourage them to see what Coventry can offer.

“A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure the event runs smoothly and I hope the weekend is blessed with good weather to encourage people to come out and support the festival.”
