Coventry among regions worst offenders for fly tipping, study shows

COVENTRY is the second worst place in the West Midlands for fly-tipping, a new study has revealed.

The study has been conducted by national firm Reliable Skip Hire which shows Coventry recording 24.68 incidents per 1,000 people in the city.

This is far above the national average for England, which stands at 19.07 incidents per 1,000 people.

Reliable Skip Hire has analysed Defra’s latest stats to discover where fly-tipping rates, for example, the illegal practice of leaving liquid or solid waste on land or in water, are highest across the country.

The data was then compared to each city’s population.

Sandwell was ranked as the worst area for fly-tipping in the region, while Telford and Wrekin, Birmingham and Tamworth completed the top five.

At the other end of the scale, there were just 2.95 fly-tipping incidents per 1,000 people in Malvern Hills.

Paul Bennett, Operations Director at Reliable Skip, commented on the findings: “Fly-tipping in England is a growing concern.

“The data shows that there were around 714,000 incidents of fly-tipping recorded in England in 2012/13, a figure which has gone up to more than one million in 2021/22 – more than a 50 per cent increase over ten years.

“More than £7 million in fines have been handed out during that period, and people need to note that there are legal and responsible ways to dispose of waste and unwanted goods which won’t damage public spaces or break the law.”
