COVENTRY author Sophie Jo has said she hopes her new young adult novel ‘The Nicest Girl’ reminds readers its ‘ok to put themselves first sometimes.’
The novel follows 17-year-old people-pleaser Anna Campbell, who explores the complexity of niceness and boundary setting.
Anna says yes to everything while keeping her own feelings buried, and sick of being the ‘nice girl’ decides to do something about it.
Author Sophie Jo studied Communication, culture and media at Coventry University and now lives in Finham.
She said: “I wrote the nicest girl because I realised how many people, especially girls and women, struggle to set boundaries and stand up for themselves.
“In the story, Anna is exhausted from spreading herself too thin and never saying ‘no’ and I was really excited to explore why that was and how she might be able to learn to balance her own feelings alongside everyone else’s.
“So many of us are scared to come across as rude or unkind, so we just nod and smile – even at the detriment of our own happiness or mental health.”
The Nicest Girl is available to buy now at Amazon, WH Smith, Waterstones and other independent bookshops.
