Coventry bench gets golden touch to remember beloved Ben Crowther

COVENTRY schoolboy Ben Crowther was honoured by the city last Friday as they painted a bench in gold outside his beloved Earlsdon Library.

Ben, who attended Earlsdon’s Hearsall Community Academy, was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in June 2018 and died a year later aged just seven.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare type of tumour which affects less than 60 children in the UK each year.

The tumour develops in the supporting soft tissues of the body.

An Earlsdon resident suggested painting a tired-looking bench outside the library gold in honour of Pass the Smile, a charity set up by Ben’s parents Scott and Sarah Crowther in his name.

The charity aims to raise cash for vital research into the condition.

Despite his illness, inspiring youngster Ben was well known for wanting to help others.

Sarah said: “Ben loved this library, he devoured books and we would spend hours here reading stories together and he would always ask for ‘just one more’.

“It is a perfect spot for the gold bench as the Pokestop at the library was also one of Ben’s favourite places to catch Pokemon.

“We are very grateful to the community of Earlsdon, and beyond, for taking Ben into their hearts and remembering him.”
