Coventry black cab firm announces further job losses

BLACK cab manufacturers London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) has announced that about 40 more jobs will go in the latest round of cuts.

A spokesperson for the Ansty Park-based company confirmed today (Friday February 15) that ‘less than’ 20 full-time staff will lose their jobs, along with a similar number of agency workers.

It comes less than a month after the company announced 70 agency job losses.

The firm produces the new electric London black cab the TX eCity.

The spokesperson said: “As part of our efforts to improve our operations and weather more challenging economic conditions we are reorganising some business functions which will lead to a reduction of less than 20 full-time positions and the release of a similar number of contractors.

“We have communicated the changes to unions and are in discussions from today with those employees likely to be affected.

“LEVC’s TX eCity has been extremely well received by the market and we expect demand to continue to grow significantly this year.”

Last month, the company said 2019 would be “a challenging year for UK automotive” and the business would prepare for this by reducing the number of staff and making productivity improvements.

It is the latest blow to West Midlands manufacturing, coming a month after Jaguar Land Rover – based in Coventry and Solihull – announced an extra week-long shutdown of its Solihull borough factories in April, in addition to a week’s shutdown around Easter, and up to 4,500 job losses throughout the company.
