A FORMER Coventry University student was a road worker a few years ago- but now he is a rising boxing star who has just signed with the same promoter as world champion Tyson Fury.
Macauley Owen was resurfacing roads when he was encouraged to apply for a sports scholarship at Coventry University by his boxing coach Shiney Singh.
Mr Singh also coached at the university to help him with a potential career in the sport.
His amateur performances in the ring caught Frank Warren’s eye and the team signed him up on a professional basis.
Macauley will be joining Warrens’s list of legendary clients, which includes ‘the Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury, Daniel Dubois and British boxing icon Nigel Benn.
The 26-year-old said: “I started boxing as I liked to fight as a kid – I was very mischievous.
“I wanted to box for a while, but my parents wouldn’t let me as they thought I would just use it out and about.
“But when they did let me go, it sorted me out. It taught me about morals and respect.
“Boxing is not just a living, it’s a religion.”
Macauley added he was excited to see what Frank Warren had in store for him in his career.
“I want to be in the sport for some years to come – I know where I want to be and want them to come back to me with a route for that rather than just the next fight.
“I used to tell people I’d get a British title, but I don’t want to put a limit on things.”
