COVENTRY Building Society has donated £1.2million to support the city’s communities and help improve the futures of the most disadvantaged.

The Society announced the donation at Alderman’s Green Primary School to coincide with Budget Day yesterday (Wednesday November 26), aiming to ‘give people of all ages the skills and support they need to manage money confidently’.

The donation is being allocated to over 100 organisations including primary and secondary schools, youth groups, foodbanks, social supermarkets, help for the elderly, Citizens Advice, Central England Law Centre, Age UK and support for the city’s homeless.

The donation includes over £415,000 for schools and youth charities to support literacy and numeracy and help raise aspirations of young people, £225,000 to Coventry Citizens Advice to support those in debt, and £250,000 to Coventry Youth Hub – a one-stop hub for young people facing homelessness.

Each of the Society’s 64 branches nationwide will also give £1,000 to their local foodbank.

Anna Cuskin, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Coventry Building Society, said: “Budget Day is about setting the country’s financial priorities, and we want to make sure Coventry communities have the tools to thrive.

“Our £1.2million commitment will help support schools, charities, and essential services, helping children enjoy learning about numbers and giving adults the confidence to manage their money.”

She said that investing in financial education would help to build stronger, more resilient communities for the future.

She added: “The recent curriculum review shows how important budgeting and digital skills are for the next generation. Our funding already helps schools in the most deprived areas, bring these lessons to life and making financial education engaging and relevant for every child.

“Alongside this, we’re continuing to back foodbanks and advice centres because we understand the pressures families face – especially during winter. This is about practical help today and confidence for tomorrow. Coventry is home to incredible organisations making a real difference every day, and we’re proud to stand with them to ensure people get the support they need when they need it most.”
