Coventry celebrates MOBO awards with host of events

AHEAD of the MOBO awards being held in Coventry, a number of organisations in the city have come together to put on a series of local events that take inspiration from the awards show.

The programme, which is titled ‘In Celebration of MOBO’, has been curated by Remarkable Productions on behalf of Coventry City Council and runs from Friday 26 November until Saturday 11 December.

One of the major contributors to the programme are Positive Youth Foundation (PYF) who are hosting a number of live events for artists and young people to attend and participate in.

The Coventry Caribbean Centre is hosting a masterclass in music on Friday 3 December, offering attendees an insight into the music industry, covering topics ranging from music licensing for TV and Film to an introduction to music publishing.

As part of the programme, the award-winning Theon Cross will be playing at Drapers Hall on Friday 3 December.

This live performance will give attendees the opportunity to experience the award-winning composer’s unique sound in the recently renovated hall.

The centrepiece of the programme will be the In Celebration of MOBO Busking Festival.

This event, on the Saturday 4 December, will see the city centre taken over by up and coming musicians.

The festival will take place across four curated performance spaces, each with their own diverse roster of talent, and will offer these musicians the chance to perform and take advantage of the national spotlight the MOBO awards are shining on the city.

Coun Abdul Salam Khan, deputy leader of Coventry City Council said: “We were absolutely delighted to be chosen as the host city for the MOBO Awards.

“Coventry is a proud, multi-cultural city and it’s fitting that we’ll be hosting the UK’s biggest celebration of black music and culture whilst we celebrate our year as the UK City of Culture.”
