Coventry chippy raises £2,000 for child cancer charity

COVENTRY chippy Hipswell Fish Saloon has raised £2,000 for local child cancer charity ‘Pass the Smile for Ben’ by holding a half-price charity day.

The charity was named after Coventry youngster Ben Crowther who passed away aged seven in 2019 from a rare form of childhood cancer.

Christos Ermogenous handed the cash to Ben’s parents, Sarah and Scott on behalf of the chippy, and they were joined by Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana, who put the groups in touch with each other.

Ben’s father, Scott Crowther said his son loved fish and chips and he would’ve ‘loved the fundraising day.’

“We have hundreds of photos of him eating food, but I would say fish and chips was his favourite.”

Christos, who is doing a PhD in cancer research, said: “It was really important our family business supported a local cancer charity for our annual fundraiser at Hipswell Fish Saloon.

“Thankfully, Zarah put us in touch with Pass the Smile for Ben at Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group.

“As soon as we heard Ben’s story, and the fact he loved fish and chips, we couldn’t wait to help raise funds and awareness for research into childhood cancer.”
