Staff from the Heart of England Co-op in Coventry have raised over £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The organisation made a total of £3,676 in its raffle which involved 37 food stores.

Other activities have included a sponsored walk in Nuneaton and a Euros football sweep stake and a car wash.

Sarah Stallard, who is based at the Support Centre, took part in the Mighty Hike in the Peak District, while her colleague Barinder Khera ran a half marathon from Kenilworth to Warwick Castle.

Catherine Evans, Heart of England Co-op’s community and charity adviser, said: “There is such a lot of love for this charity amongst our colleagues.

“A form was sent to more than 700 people across our stores and funeral homes and they vote do overwhelmingly to support Macmillan over the next two years.

“We still have the restof this year to go and all next year too and so we’re hoping to raise a record amount of money.

“One in two people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime, and everyone knows about the wonderful work that Macmillan does to help patients in Coventry and Warwickshire.”

A spokesperson for the charity gave three examples of how the £10,000 raised so far could help people in the local area.

“It could provide 50 people with a Macmillan financial grant to help with the extra costs that living with cancer can bring.

“It could enable our Cancer Information and Support team to run our Macmillan Support Line phone service for 19 hours.

“In this time, they could deal with 463 calls and web enquiries from people who want questions answered and need practical or financial support.

“It could also pay for a Macmillan nurse for two months, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.”
