Coventry council submit application for solar farm near M6

Coventry Editorial 18th Jun, 2023   0

COVENTRIANS living near a proposed solar farm in the north of the city have been invited to have their say after the city council submitted a planning application.

The proposed solar farm would be constructed on a 103-acre site near Lentons Lane and close to the M6.

The site is owned by the council and is currently used for sheep farming with some crop cultivation.

The council aims to deliver clean, green energy with the solar farm as well as bring benefits to the local community.

Options to continue farming are being looked at as part of the plans.

Those living close to the site were able to comment on the proposals at a drop-in session earlier this year, with their feedback taken into account.

They can now have their say again through the planning website.

The planning application requests permission to develop a solar farm which over a year would produce enough energy to power 7,650 homes over the same period.

The council’s cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change, Coun Jim O’Boyle, said: “Climate change presents an enormous challenge that we all have a responsibility to rise to.

“The proposed solar farm is part of a wide range of schemes helping deliver our and the city’s climate change ambition.

“The power it generates will be sustainable, clean, green energy-sensitive to the natural environment.

“There will be local biodiversity gains which include doubling the amount of hedgerow, improving the existing grassland and increasing the amount of existing wildlife habitat by 40 per cent.

“Additional trees and hedges will be planted to provide screening.

“We will be working closely with the tenant farmer and with local people to ensure they are involved every step of the way and to ensure they get some of the green benefits too.”
