Coventry data on sexual orientation and gender identity revealed in census first

COVENTRY’S latest 2021 Census data has revealed the first-ever estimates on gender identity and sexual orientation in the city.

The latest results show 3.16 per cent of people aged 16 or over in Coventry identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or other, slightly below the average for England and Wales, which stood at 3.2 per cent, while 8.85 per cent of the city’s population did not answer.

In addition, 0.47 per cent of those aged 16 and over have another sexual orientation.

However, 0.79 per cent of people aged 16 and over in Coventry have a gender identity different from their sex registered at birth, higher than the 0.5 per cent average in England and Wales.




In addition, 0.14 per cent of Coventrians aged 16 and over are trans women, while the same percentage of people are trans men.

The census revealed 0.07 per cent of the city aged 16 or over are non-binary and 0.04 per cent have another gender identity.


The figures also revealed 91.57 per cent of people aged 16 years and over in the city have a gender identity the same as their sex registered at birth, while 0.14 per cent are trans women, the same percentage of the population are trans men and 0.07 per cent are non-binary.

Census Service Director at the UK Data Service Dr Oliver Duke-Williams, said it was a ‘great step forward’ that diversity now extends to understanding more about gender identity and sexual orientation, adding these were aspects of our lives that are ‘vitally important.’

Other data reveals 53.1 per cent of people in Coventry identify as British while 12.9 per cent identify as English.

In addition, 17.51 per cent of Coventrians don’t speak English as their main language.

In Coventry, 57.1 per cent of households in Coventry have members that are all from the same ethnic group, whereas 2.5 per cent have members from ethnic groups that differ between generations but not within partnerships.

And 5.7 per cent of Coventry households have members from ethnic groups that differ within partnerships.

Almost 44 per cent of people in Coventry are Christian, while 29.6 per cent have no religion.

In addition, 10.4 per cent of people in Coventry are Muslim, 4 per cent are Hindu and 5 per cent are Sikh.
