Coventry drug dealer jailed for death by dangerous driving

Coventry Editorial 30th May, 2023   0

A DRUG dealer has been jailed for six years for death by dangerous driving after a man died during a collision in Coventry.

Matthew Morrall was driving his BMW 1 series above 70mph along Jardine Crescent in the early hours of November 1, 2021 when he lost control of his car and hit a pole, with the passenger side sustaining the impact.

The passenger, a man in his 20s, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead after the pair were taken to hospital.

Morrall admitted to smoking cannabis and drinking Vodka, and after a search of his vehicle police found a large bag of cannabis, cash and a mobile phone.

Officers discovered Morrall had been drug dealing on the night of the collision through analysis of his phone records.

Traffic collision investigators analysed CCTV in the area, the scene and the car and were able to determine how fast Morrall was going right before the crash.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply class B drugs at Warwick Crown Court.

Alongside his six-year sentence, Morrall was disqualified from driving for nine years and five months.

He will also be required to complete an extended driving test before being allowed back behind the wheel.

Det Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Morrall admitted to drinking vodka and taking cannabis that night, yet he still chose to get behind the wheel and drive at lethal speeds in a 30mph zone.

“His dangerous driving has resulted in a lot of suffering for the family and friends of the man who lost his life and sadly no prison sentence will ever bring him back.”
