Coventry family remember their much loved father by donating blood

A COVENTRY Sikh family have taken inspiration from their late father to donate blood in his memory.

The Singh family took time out of their busy schedule to donate blood after losing Lal Singh to severe anaemia in January 2016.

Due to his illness, prior to his sad death, Mr Singh received blood transfusions every two weeks during many years of treatment.

After seeing how blood transfusions improved his quality of life, the Singh family pledged to donate blood in his memory and attended the Holiday Inn session in London Road.

Inviting friends along to help the cause too, the Singh’s provided extra snacks and treats for blood donors at the session as a thank you for their generosity.

Grandchildren Eksahib and Jasgobind also created a special poem in memory of their much missed grandfather.

Ranbir Singh Lakhpuri said his father’s illness made him realise how important it is to give blood.

The 44-year-old added: “My father benefited from regular blood transfusions and the transfusions he received literally bought life to him each time he had them.

“As a family we wanted to give something back to the community and we would encourage more people from the Asian communities to help save lives and give blood.

“I was a little tense before donating but the staff were wonderful and very caring and the thought of giving blood was actually more painful then the donation itself.

“The sense of satisfaction and pride that another human being will benefit from one hour of my time giving blood was immense.”

Though overall blood use within the NHS has reduced as a result of improvements in clinical and surgical practices, 6,000 donations are still needed each day to meet the needs of patients in England.

Blood donated is used to treat critically ill patients – and people with with Group O, A, B and AB negative are needed.

People aged between 17 and 66 who are healthy and weigh over seven stone 12lbs are able to give blood.
