A COVENTRY graduate and student leader joined HRH Princess Beatrice for student mental health week discussion.

In a collaboration aimed at prioritising student mental health, Mahbub Shuhag joined HRH Princess Beatrice, along with organisations including Chegg, Student Minds, and the Mental Health Foundation, for an intimate discussion during Student Mental Health Week 2024.

Mahbub is a first class BA graduate in global business and management, and was a key participant in the discussion which centred on how UK universities can better support the mental health needs of its students.

HRH Princess Beatrice shared her own experiences with neurodiversity, after being diagnosed with dyslexia aged seven, and emphasised the significance of accommodating students’ unique needs.

The discussion explored various factors of the mental health crisis among students, drawing attention to statistics from the recent Chegg global student survey, which revealed high rates of anxiety, sleep deprivation, and academic burnout among UK university students.

HRH Princess Beatrice said: “Embracing neurodiversity is not just a commitment to inclusivity, but a catalyst for innovation and progress.

“Today’s roundtable highlighted the importance of standing united in our pursuit to cultivate an environment where every student, regardless of their neurological makeup, can thrive in their studies and beyond.”

Mahbub Shuhag, added: “I was honoured to take part in this important roundtable on student mental health.

“This discussion was an important reminder that listening to student voices is essential if we are to enact policies to meaningfully support mental health in higher education.”

Student Mental Health Week, started by Chegg in 2023, had a focus this year of tackling student loneliness.
