A seventy-year-old Coventry hairdresser has won the National Award for Innovation for his development of salon towels which drastically reduce laundry costs.
Peter Johnson, the salon owner of 17a, was recognised by Creative HEAD Magazine who scouts for initiatives that may benefit the hairdressing industry.
Peter said: “Keeping a supply of freshly laundered towels is an expensive challenge for all hairdressers and one which I have faced daily throughout my 50-year career.
“I was really excited by the prospect of creating something which could help all hairdressers, and to have this recognised with an Award for Innovation, is a huge vote of confidence and will help bring the concept to a wider audience.”
His bleach-resistant itzi towel and turban system aims to reduce the need for cotton towels and has been described as a damage-free way to quick-dry hair before styling.
Creative HEAD publisher Catherine Handcock explained: “Doing business sustainably has become a key goal for so many salons, and itzi delivers all the green qualities bosses are looking for, without compromising on quality.
“The fact these towels and turbans out-perform even disposables, is quite extraordinary.”
