Coventry hall looking to play 'central role' in keeping City of Culture legacy alive

COVENTRY Central Hall is looking for support as it explores ways it can help the City of Culture’s legacy burn brightly.

The venue played a key role in numerous different events during Coventry’s City of Culture year.

In January, it also hosted the Cosy Creatives scheme as part of the trust’s legacy programme, enabling visitors to enjoy inventive projects while staying in a warm space.

Staff are using the data collected through that event to show the importance of cultural projects for the community and the role Central Hall could play in continuing the City of Culture’s legacy.

The trust having gone into administration has cast doubt over the planned three-year culture legacy.

Ade Johnson, from Central Hall, said: “We have seen how cultural projects can help disadvantaged people in Coventry.

“We feel we can play a big role in continuing the City of Culture’s great work by helping the people that need us, even if the trust isn’t able to continue.”

The more than 90-year-old Central Hall building is just outside the boundaries of the planned City Centre South redevelopment project.

Central Hall staff have already had meetings with developers to discuss the value it could add to the scheme.

Rev Stephen Willey said the main priority was continuing the City of Culture legacy but it was important the City Centre South project worked well.

“We feel as we are on the edge of that development we really want to benefit Coventry in its response to City Centre South.

“There will be new people moving into the area and we want to help as many as possible while showing the best Coventry has to offer.”

The back of Central Hall and the stage are currently inaccessible.

Rev Willey said they wanted to rectify these issues so future activities would be accessible to all and any support would be appreciated.
