COVENTRY has had the most amount of student thefts in England over the last two years, according to research by MoneySuperMarket.

The research shows 68 per cent of students have had possessions stolen within the past two years, three per cent higher than Brighton and Hove in second.

This figure is also 19 per cent higher than the national average.

In addition, 60 per cent of students across the UK, or 1.596million people, do not have or do not know if they have insurance for their belongings, and could face paying thousands to replace their items if they are stolen.

MoneySuperMarket surveyed students across the country, combining the results with price comparison data from the 2020/21 academic year to understand the financial impact of incidents on young people.

On average, it costs £340 for students to repair or replace their lost, stolen or broken belongings.

MoneySuperMarkets insurance expert David McDermottroe said: “In total, 96 per cent of students say they’re cutting back on spending because of the cost-of-living crisis and forgoing contents insurance could seem like an easy way to save money.

“But, if they have to replace a vital laptop needed for their studies or another expensive item like a bike, it could be financially devastating.”
