Coventry homelessness project hailed a success

Coventry Editorial 7th May, 2024   0

A NEW project aimed at helping end youth homelessness in Coventry has been hailed a success.

Recent findings reveal a staggering reality for young people in the West Midlands, with 35 per cent feeling unsupported in their communities with closures of youth centers and a dwindling presence of youth workers.

In response to these challenges, McDonald’s – in collaboration with the Positive Youth Foundation – has initiated the Makin’ It project, aiming to cultivate potential and provide vital support to the youth of Coventry.

The scheme comes after the successful pilot in Coventry, where McDonald’s Cross Cheaping has been a steadfast supporter of youth development for over a decade.

Recognising the pressing need for safe spaces and opportunities, McDonald’s has pledged to expand the Makin’ It scheme nationwide, with plans to fund 500 new youth work qualifications and establish safe havens in all 1,450 restaurants across the UK.

John Kiely MBE, franchisee of seven restaurants across Coventry, said: “It’s no secret that young people today are facing some incredibly challenging times, particularly when it comes to accessing trusted adult support and opportunities.

“With around 60 per cent of my workforce being under 25, we’ve seen first-hand the difference that access to training, jobs and support can make.

“We want all young people in our Coventry community to feel like they have opportunities to make the most of their life and broaden their horizons, so with the scale of the Makin’ It project, we have the ability to make a real difference.”

With the nationwide expansion of the project, McDonald’s aims to bridge the gap in youth support services and empower young people to realise their full potential.
