COVENTRY will come together and join people all over the world to mark Ukraine Independence Day today (Thursday, August 24), writes Morgan Hart.
The event looks set to be another poignant one, coming 18 months since Russian forces invaded the country.
Since then, Coventry has been one of the many cities to open its doors and give sanctuary to brave Ukranian refugees fleeing the terrifying conflict.
Ukraine’s flag will be flown over Coventry City Council House.
Coventry City Council ‘s deputy leader, Coun Abdul Salam Khan, said: “As a city of peace and reconciliation and sanctuary, we have been proud to welcome those we can and offer our support.
“Today, and every day, we stand by them and we repeat our call for the Russian government to end this terrible war.”
A Ukrainian Independence Day Service will take place at Coventry Ukrainian Church at 11am today (Thursday).
The event has been organised by the Coventry branch of AUGB – the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.
