IN AN unexpected turn of events, Coventry karate champion, Ian McCranor, has found himself thrust into the spotlight of the retro gaming world, all thanks to a chapter in his book – ‘Fighting With Myself’ – published last year.

Ian who competed in international karate has been asked to be a guest at the midwest gaming convention in Milwaukee in America.

The chapter, titled ‘Angus MacGregor,’ delves into the theme of recognising one’s potential, recounting Ian’s experience as a character in the cult classic computer game ‘Kasumi Ninja.’

His character was made 30 years ago.

Ian, who is originally from Willenhall, a former nightclub bouncer, England karate team member and Commonwealth silver medalist, said he was surprised by the surreal nature of his ‘new-found celebrity status’.

“I walked away after filming the game thinking that was it, and now three decades later, it’s gained lots of attention and people want to meet me.”

He added: “Who would have imagined, a seed planted 30 years ago would now be bearing fruit.”

The unexpected twist came when organisers of a retro video game convention in Milwaukee stumbled upon Ian’s chapter and extended an invitation for him to attend their upcoming event in April.

Ian’s portrayal of Angus MacGregor has garnered a cult following in the gaming industry, with enthusiasts eager to meet the man behind the digital avatar.

At the conventions, Ian will embody the character of Angus, signing autographs, posing for pictures, and engaging in meet-and-greet sessions with fans.

Additionally, he will share insights into the making of the game, offering enthusiasts a behind-the-scenes look at the gaming industry.

The three-day retro convention in Milwaukee marks a significant milestone and solidifying his status as a beloved figure in the gaming community whilst highlighting the unexpected journey from karate champion to retro-gaming celebrity.
