COVENTRY kicked off the most wonderful time of the year last night with its annual Christmas lights switch-on in the city centre.

The evening’s entertainment started with a vibrant procession from LED drumming group ‘SPARK!’, and this was followed by performances from local acts including Sandra Godley and the Gospel Collective, Freemen Dance and Belles of the Three Spires.

The popular DJ Santa got the Coventry crowd dancing away to tunes, and the event ended with an incredible festival laser show.

Coventry City Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for events, Coun Abdul Salam Khan said: “We wanted to do something truly spectacular for this year’s switch-on and it was really pleasing to see thousands of people in Broadgate out enjoying this magical event.

“As a Council, we’re acutely aware that many people are financially struggling right now so we felt it was incredibly important to provide this free, festive event for families to experience.

“I was also delighted that many fantastic local performers were able to take to the stage and showcase their talent.

“We have a vast number of talented creative people in Coventry and we must give them opportunities to showcase their talent.”

The festivities will continue next Friday, November 25 with the opening of the ice rink in Broadgate alongside a festive food market.
