Coventry landlord cautioned for illegally evicting tenant via text

Coventry Editorial 19th Jul, 2023   0

A COVENTRY landlord has been cautioned for illegally evicting one of his tenants via text.

The landlord told the tenant to leave after they said they would be late with the rent, before going over to the property and taking their key.

The city council were then contacted and the landlord was interviewed under caution.

The landlord showed immediate remorse and has since apologised to the tenant.

He’s also arranged for a solicitor to handle any future evictions while he is trying to sell the property.

Formal cautions can be offered to people who admit wrongdoing early on and accept responsibility for their actions.

They can only be offered where there is enough evidence to realistically prosecute and don’t allow the offender to be publicly named.

The formal caution can stop landlords from gaining various licenses in the city, including the ability to manage Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO).

The tenant also has the option of now bringing a civil action.
