A COVENTRY man has been ordered to register as a sex offender after using his mobile phone to try to record a young woman getting dressed.

Kevin Stokes (49) of Marion Road, Foleshill, pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to a charge of attempted voyeurism.

He was sentenced to 27 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months, with a rehabilitation activity for 20 days, and was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work.

In addition, because the sentence was longer than six months, Judge Peter Cooke ordered him to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Prosecutor William Dudley said that in October last year Stokes was at an address in Coventry at a time when a young woman who lived there was having a shower.

After finishing her shower, she wrapped a towel round her and returned to her bedroom to get dressed.

She took the towel off, and at that point she noticed a mobile phone appear at a small window above the door – and when she screamed, the phone was quickly moved away, said Mr Dudley.

The police were contacted, and after Stokes was arrested the phone, which Judge Cooke ordered should be forfeited and destroyed, was found in a wheelie bin at his home.

Nothing was found on the phone, or on any other devices seized by the police, and Nicholas Berry, defending, said it had been an isolated incident.

He conceded that the offence had a ‘starting point’ of six months imprisonment, but argued that it could be suspended – and the judge agreed.
